Long time readers of this blog are aware that I count my possessions each year in June. This year, my kids are moving into their own places. As they leave, they take their stuff with them. Even more exciting, is that they are taking a lot of our formerly shared stuff too. Furniture, kitchen items, décor have all been spoken for.
In this photo, from top left to bottom right: backpack, hat, suitcase, wallet (resting on the top of the organizer,) hanging organizer, socks, panties and bras (I’m not counting underwear separate this year, just including them in the 7 outfits–but if you would like to count them separately–there are 7 pair of socks, 7 panties and 4 bras,) 4 exercise outfits, 4 pair of shoes, ear warmer, gloves and swim suit, 9 hangers, black dress, 6 everyday outfits (I am wearing the 7th,) 2 coats (only one in the photo–the other is at the cleaners,) and the laundry basket. Counted in the clothing total, but not in the photo are a pair of earrings, a necklace and a hair clip. This gives a total of 35 clothing items. The laundry basket, suitcase, wallet and backpack I have included in the miscellaneous total.
And lastly furniture, which is a new category for this count, as previously all furniture except my bed was included in the items that I shared with the kids.
Other items you see in the photos belong to my kids. I am thrilled that when I move at the end of summer, I can get everything I own into the hatchback of my car.
This is inspiring…my stuff appears to have been on the increase recently and taking over a bit…I am certain I will not get down to 78 items, but I need to get onto a downward spiral, number-wise, rather than upwards. I have banned myself from browsing the internet for things I think that I might need to purchase as soon as an idea pops into my head- instead I am making a list and looking for things once a week. It’s helping!
My crafting supplies and personal care supplies are the things that seem to have increased recently- time to see what can be rehomed and what can be used up to avoid further purchases.

Obviously I mean 83 items rather than 78, which I wrote for some unknown reason!

I think maybe 78 was last year’s number. 🙂

I also have used the strategy of writing down a desired purchase and enforcing a waiting period before purchasing it. And of course, the yearly count keeps me from buying stuff……because I would have to count it.

Fawn, I think your strategy of writing down with waiting period, (as well as having to count it) is a good one for me to practice. Also, NicolaB’s practice of banning herself from EVEN BROWSING on the internet is good. Looking forward to your blogging regarding living with your mother. Always great to see a post from you in my email.

Oh, I always look forward to these posts. You inspire me with your seven outfits. I don’t have quite that few!!! More like ten. If I may ask, where are you moving to?

I will be moving in with my mother. She is 85 and needing more help with her yard & housework. I will blog about the move and how we negotiate our living together after 41 years of independence.

I always enjoy these posts, so thankyou.
Having just returned from a sailing trip where I only had what I really needed, it’s always an eye-opener to get home and reconsider all the other stuff I think I love… and that’s after years of decluttering ;o.

hi fawn,
i always enjoy your item counting but have a few questions. don’t you use sunscreen?
i don’t see any plates or glasses in your kitchen count. what do you do when a friend
comes to visit?

I am allergic to a couple ingredients in most sunscreens. I am wearing the hat, if outdoors for extended periods of time. I have started to look for natural ingredient sunscreens that are not too pricey. Regarding the dishes, for the summer I am serving guests off my kid’s dishes. In the fall, I will have access to my mother’s extensive dish collection. After that, who knows?

Hi Fawn, Can I know about the shoes? What are your 4 pairs? I still can’t seem to narrow mine down to as low a number as I would like. Always LOVE these posts. SERIOUSLY
inspiring. Elizabeth
PS Even though you are going to your mom’s, are you considering doing a new caravan-type solution on her property? That could be the best of both worlds (being around to help her out/having your own space). I can’t remember when you scrapped Sheba if you said you were going to try to find a new one.

The subdivision covenant at my mom’s house would not allow a small structure on her property–so I’ll just fix up one of the 4 bedrooms to suit me. I will do a post soon with individual photos of the clothing. Thanks for the feedback–I love hearing from my readers.
